Carpet Ratings

Carpets are rated according to the “Australian Carpet Classification Scheme.” This rating system has Domestic and Contract (Commercial) ratings.

Domestic ratings

  • Domestic duty

oztop-accs_reslabThis rating is used on carpets that are not considered suitable for medium duty quality. The ACCS Scheme does not recognise this rating. Carpets that have this rating are usually builder’s ranges. Some carpets in this quality range do not have any rating and therefore are not covered with a wear warranty. They are however covered by the manufacturer’s guarantee of quality. This means that if there is a manufacturing fault in the carpet they will replace or repair it.

  • Medium duty domestic

This rating allows for the carpet to be installed in areas of a domestic house, having a medium level of traffic, such as bedrooms and living rooms. It is not suitable for stairs but can be installed on stairs at the customer’s request.

  • Heavy duty domestic

This rating allows for the carpet to be installed in areas of a domestic house having a heavy level of traffic, including stairs, family rooms, dining rooms etc. Some carpets with this rating can also have a Light or Medium Duty Commercial rating.

  • Extra Heavy duty domestic

This rating allows for the carpet to be installed in all areas of a domestic house having a high level of traffic including stairs, family rooms, dining rooms etc. Some carpets with this rating can also have a Light, Medium or Heavy-Duty Commercial rating.

Contract(Commercial) Ratings

  • Light duty Commercial

This rating allows for the carpet to be installed in commercial areas, having a light level of traffic, such as home or small offices. The construction of the carpet determines if it is suitable for stairs. For example, a short, compact loop or twist pile would be more suitable than a higher open cut pile. If not suitable, then it can be installed on stairs at the customer’s request. These carpets can have Heavy-Duty Domestic ratings as well.

  • Medium duty Commercial

This rating allows for the carpet to be installed in commercial areas, having a medium level of commercial traffic, such as small offices, Hotel rooms etc. It is suitable for installation on stairs. These carpets can have Heavy-Duty and sometimes Extra Heavy-Duty Domestic ratings as well.

  • Heavy duty Commercial

This rating allows for the carpet to be installed in commercial areas having a high level of traffic including stairs, Boardrooms, Hotel rooms and large offices etc. These carpets usually have Extra Heavy-Duty Domestic ratings as well.

  • Extra Heavy duty Commercial

This rating allows for the carpet to be installed in all Commercial areas having a high level of traffic including stairs, Boardrooms, Hotel rooms, large offices and Shopping centres. These carpets also have, Extra Heavy-Duty domestic rating as well.

The construction of a carpet as well as the style, weight and fibre can all have a determining effect on the performance and therefore the rating of the carpet.
